Baby Shoe Review - How to Choose Baby's First Shoe

There are probably few things that are more exciting than watching a child go through his first steps. Unfortunately, it’s at about this stage that you start hearing all the warnings about getting your child their first pair of baby shoes – what to get as well as what to avoid. Things like those little knitted nothings are fine for when baby is first crawling and not quite walking, but as soon as they start to walk, baby shoes can get a lot more complicated.

Read on for your guide to dealing with those complications

There are numerous different types of baby shoes available on the market today. The trouble is to decide what is best for your baby. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), there are several recommendations that will help you find the right shoes for your new walker. These will help your baby walk and not harm them as they continue to learn to walk.

Children’s feet have a natural tendency to grip the ground with their toes as they walk. As a result, they really don’t need arch support until they are older. As a result, especially when you are at home, don’t worry about arch support. Let your child walk barefooted. This allows your child to develop their natural foot growth. It is when the surfaces they walk on become uneven, cold, hot, or rocky, baby shoes should be worn to maximize foot protection.

The AAP gives several general guidelines for choosing your child’s first pair of baby shoes:

  1. Baby shoes should be made of a lightweight and flexible material that supports the foot movement. Babies need all the support they can get!
  2. Baby shoes should be made of leather or mesh and allow your child’s foot to breathe naturally. I personally avoid synthetic materials and squeaker shoes (super irritating!) as additional requirements!
  3. Baby shoes should have a rubber sole for good traction and in order to prevent slipping and sliding on their walking surface. Children fall enough on their own haha!

With these guidelines in mind, check out these excellent brands for proper baby shoes!
